Gravity & Connection: An Introduction to Contact Improvisation

Contact Improvisation, a dance form developed in 1972 by American choreographer Steve Paxton and fellow dancers, invites an improvised dialogue between bodies through touch and movement. It focuses on exploring physical elements such as gravity, leverage, momentum, friction, and various forces like centripetal and centrifugal. These elements open up a vast landscape for playful and mindful exploration, allowing for unique and dynamic improvisation opportunities.

In these introductory class, we will focus on two foundational elements for this practice.

We'll delve into the topic of weight, experimenting with how to perceive and manage the sensation of our weight in both stillness and movement. We'll explore using weight as a grounding reference, particularly in moments of disorientation. Participants will learn techniques for exchanging weight with others, working with balance, modulating muscular tone, and expanding body awareness to experience different variations of weight in diverse interactions.

This class is designed for individuals who may come alone or with others, and we encourage participants to be open to working with different partners throughout the session. While it’s great if you arrive with a partner, the aim is to cultivate an open and adaptable environment where all can explore the dynamic possibilities of contact with a variety of bodies.

We recommend wearing comfortable clothes that allow for easy movement. This session is especially suitable for those involved in body work, somatic activities, and anyone interested in deepening their connection to movement through touch.

Cost is 25 euros per person and includes the participation of the rope jam that will follow at 6:30.

Come and discover how to use the principles of contact improvisation as a guide for connection and somatic awareness!

Looking forward to seeing you soon!
